All hail the O-Line

If you’ve been watching the videos uploaded of the Flyers ’87 season you can’t help but marvel at the ease with which the Luton backs moved the ball. Whether it was Dave Munn, Tony Bayne, Danny Bayne, Tony Prince, Mark Schrater or Tony Trowsdale who was making the yardage what you will also have noticed is the fact that they were rarely touched until well across the offensive line.

Whilst the backs, receivers and linebackers may grab the headlines, the Flyers were built around a rock solid offensive front that dominated opponents on a weekly basis. With that in mind, it seems like a great time to share this picture of the ’87 offense provided by Paul Mitchell. I’m pretty sure on the names of the linemen, but if I’ve made a mistake please let me know.

Giving the orders is US player coach Mark Schrater to;-

74 – Ivan Peryer OT

61 – Ken Powell OG

50 – Andy Gregory OC (hidden behind Schrater)

60 – Jim Archell OG

73 – Dirk Cooper OT

Almost hidden behind Ken Powell is the other dominating force upfront – TE Bernie Hackshaw who was a great pass catching Tight End and went on to earn international honours on the defensive line in his post-Flyers career.

we also had Ian “Bull” Butterick at Tackle and its better to be hidden behind coach schrater than hiding from him in Glasgow – Mobalot for those who were there and/or remember that far back !!

Thanks Andy. Can’t find any decent shots of Ian in what I have at the moment but will keep my eyes peeled.
Can’t see what problem Mark would have had in Glasgow. Everyone was in bed really early weren’t they?!
