With the Anglian Division title in the bag, Luton returned to Kenilworth Road with their sights firmly set on a perfect 10 – 0 record. Standing in the way of win number nine were the over matched Mustangs who had succumbed to the Flyers 96 – 7 in their first meeting. With confidence riding high and a boisterous 750 plus crowd on hand, coach Schrater’s number one priority was to protect against any dip in the Flyers focus as they headed towards to playoffs.
In the event, Luton came out firing against Medway, building up a 67 – 0 lead before the visitors were able to break their duck. Early defensive pressure saw Luton stop Medway and start their opening drive on the Mustangs 43. A 33 yard Schrater to Ned Hoyte pass set up a First and Goal after one play and Schrater opened the scoring on Luton’s second play with a 10 yard run.
Luton’s early season fumble-itus returned on their second drive when RB Tony Bayne collected a Schrater pass but then coughed up the ball. Medway provided an early scare when they got to the Luton 2 but were unable to punch the ball in and Luton replied with a 5 play 88 yard drive, their longest of the season. FB Danny Bayne ripped the Mustangs defense for 23 yards on the opening play before his brother Tony added another 22. RB Tony Prince got in on the act with a 13 yard gain before Schrater capped the drive with passes of 21 and 9 yards, the scoring strike to TE Bernie Hackshaw.
Schrater and Hackshaw again teamed up to open Luton’s next drive with a 24 yard pass but the Flyers were unable to sustain the drive and turned the ball over on downs at the Mustangs 39 to open the second quarter. A solid defensive display saw the ball quickly back in Luton’s hands and Schrater hit WR Brian Rafferty for 13 before finding Hoyte from 21 to extend the lead to 19 – 0.
Tony Bayne took just one play to extend Luton’s lead on their following drive when he ripped off a 58 yard touchdown run. Brother Danny added the two point conversion for a 27 – 0 lead. Another quick scoring drive followed as Tony Prince ran for 21 yards to set up Schrater’s fourth scoring pass of the half, 16 yards to Hoyte. Luton finished the half with a scrappy drive that featured a Flyers penalty, a 17 yard Mustangs sack, a 25 yard Medway pass interference penalty and Tony Bayne’s second scoring run of the half from 22 yards out. Schrater tacked on the PAT to leave Luton 40 – 0 up at the break.
Despite a 73 yard Tony Prince run Luton were unable to extend their lead on the opening drive of the second half as Tony Bayne fumbled the ball away on the Mustangs 7. Prince’s efforts were rewarded on the next drive though as Bayne turned provider with runs of 14 and 12 to set up Prince’s 3 yard score.
More good defensive pressure saw Luton start their next drive on the Medway 34 and they took just three plays to capitalise. Schrater missed on passes to Hackshaw and Hoyte before Tony Bayne took the ball in from 34 yards out to put Luton up 53 – 0.
A more sustained drive on their next possession saw Luton going 61 yards in 7 plays. Prince again starred with runs of 15 and 5 yards as the Flyers drove to the Mustangs 15 where Schrater hit Hackshaw for the score. A drive starting on the Mustangs 24 led to Luton’s next score when Schrater hit Hoyte for a 15 yard touchdown to make it 67 – 0 at the end of the third quarter.
Medway showed their determination as they entered the final quarter focused on avoiding a shutout, an interception of Schrater’s pass setting up a 1 yard scoring run. Luton responded with a 6 play drive keyed by a 12 yard pass to Hackshaw, Tony Trowsdale’s 11 yard run and Tony Bayne’s 16 and 31 yard runs, the second for the final Luton score. Those two runs also pushed Bayne over 200 yards on the day with 4 TD’s.
Medway showed grit in adding the final two scores of the game as they hit field goals from 40 and 30 yards to leave a final score of 74 – 13.
With one game to go, Luton stood on the threshold of a perfect campaign and a home fixture at Kenilworth Road looked like a great place to celebrate.
