Luton (9-0)                     6 – 13 – 17 – 22 = 58

With the Anglian Division title secured, Luton hosted local rivals North Herts looking to secure a perfect 10 – 0 season. Coach Schrater also looked to keep the Flyers focused as they proceeded into the postseason for the first time.

Luton were not at their best early as they struggled to make their superiority pay against a game Raiders side. An opening drive saw two incomplete passes before Mark Schrater was stopped on a 4th and 5. The following drive featured a 22 yard run by RB Tony Prince and a 15 yard Flyers penalty before Schrater was intercepted.

A good defensive performance gave Luton a short field on their next drive and it took 5 plays to cover the 34 yards required to open the scoring. A big 25 yard run by RB Tony Bayne set Luton up with a first and goal and two plays later he ran in from 5 yards. Stand in kicker Schrater missed the PAT so Luton led just 6 – 0 as the first quarter ended.

A long Flyers drive opened the second quarter as they put together a 13 play 47 yard drive that was memorable for two recovered fumbles before Tony Prince finally lost the third fumble of the drive. More miscues slowed Luton as Schrater was picked off on the next Luton drive. Another good defensive stand gave the Flyers another short field to set up their second score. Starting on the Raiders 32, Luton took 5 plays to cover the required yardage with Tony Bayne running for 29 and Schrater finding Bernie Hackshaw for 12 to the 1 yard line where the Flyers QB ran in to make it 12 – 0. An attempted 2 point pass to Ithan Clarke failed.

Luton effectively killed the game before the half as they added their third TD. An impressive 71 yard drive in 8 plays was highlighted by FB Danny Bayne’s 13 yard run and passes of 11 yard and 18 yards by QB Jeff Thomas, fresh off a plane, to set up his 5 yard pass to Hackshaw. Schrater added the conversion to make it 19 -0 at the break.

Power running by Tony Bayne, Tony Prince, Dave Munn and Danny Bayne saw Luton take the second half kickoff and march 35 yards. Two big penalties stymied Luton and they had to settle for a Munn 27yd Field Goal to make it 22 – 0. Luton’s defense was again dominant and the offense only needed to take the ball 23 yards to extend their lead to 30 – 0 on Thomas’ 2 yard run and Schrater’s 2 point pass to Hackshaw.

There was time for another score in the third as Luton got the ball at the Raiders 11. Thomas found Ithan Clarke for 10 and Tony Bayne added the final yard to make it 36 – 0. A big 83 yard drive opened  the final quarter with Tony Baynes starring with a 34 yard gain to set up Thomas’ 11 yard strike to Hackshaw.

A final long drive saw Luton eat up the clock as they went 79 yards in 10 plays behind a 14 yard Tony Prince run and Thomas’ third scoring pass to Hackshaw, this time from 28 yards. Munn’s PAT made it 51 – 0.

As the clock ran out Luton had time for a final score when a 30 yard Thomas to Darren Gray set up the Flyers on the Raiders 1. Using a ‘jumbo’ package, DT Tim Willis ran twice, fumbling both times but the second was recovered in the endzone by RB Dave Fryer to record the final TD of an amazing regular season. Fittingly, the final points came from the boot of Munn who added the PAT to make it 58 – 0.

Munn’s limited return from injury boosted the Luton ground game, but Tony Bayne has already shown his ability in Munn’s absence and added 136 yards for his fourth straight 100 yard performance. Tony Prince chipped in with 105 yards to give Luton two backs over 100 for the fourth straight game. Defensively Luton were dominant with 2 sacks, 3 fumble recoveries and 2 interceptions along with 6 pass break ups.

Huge celebrations followed as Flyers players emerged into the Directors Box at Kenilworth Road to spray the fans with champagne, a fitting ending to a dream regular season. Up next was an Anglo Conference playoff trip to Coventry to face the Bears. With a perfect regular season behind them the Flyers were believing Coach Schrater’s claim that they could beat anybody.
